The experience

Eight hours, three stops, one driver. The tour leaves Aix en Provence in the morning and moves through the Rhône Valley's Roman heartland. First comes Orange, where the amphitheater still stands 103 meters long and 37 meters high, built two millennia ago for gladiator fights. You can walk inside or stay outside. Entry is optional. The Pont du Gard comes next, a three-tiered aqueduct that carried water from Uzès to Nîmes under the Emperor Augustus and his son-in-law Agrippa. Entrance is included, and the structure is massive enough that most travelers spend time on the lower level and the walkway above it.

Nîmes is the final stop. The Arena of Nîmes is the third amphitheater on the route and one of the best preserved in France. It still hosts bullfights and concerts. The Maison Carrée, a Roman temple from the first century, sits nearby in the town center and is in such good condition that it looks almost intact. Like Orange's amphitheater, entry to both is optional and paid on arrival. The whole route is private, so the pace and time at each site depend on your interest. The driver waits and the guide answers questions throughout the day.
