The experience
This is the only private shore excursion from Rouen built entirely around the Canadian story of D-Day. At Juno Beach, Canadian assault troops stormed ashore against fierce German defenses. The Juno Beach Centre, the only Canadian museum in Normandy, tells that story through photos, archives and first-hand accounts of the 45,000 Canadians who lost their lives in the war. The museum sits just behind the sand dunes, surrounded by German bunkers, beach obstacles and Allied military equipment that still marks the landing zone.
From Juno Beach, the tour moves inland to Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and set on a small hill overlooking the coast. The cemetery holds 2,043 Canadian graves, including 359 Canadians killed on D-Day itself. The entrance is marked by four maples and a Stone of Remembrance. At the center stands the Cross of Sacrifice. The final stop is Bernières-sur-Mer, on the eastern side of Juno Beach, where the Queen's Own Rifles and North Shore Regiment attacked. The main monument there stands near the "Canadian House," a building that appears in countless D-Day photographs and still flies a Canadian flag.
