The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the bubbles—it was the hush inside Reims Cathedral. Our guide, Lucie, waved us in just as the bells finished echoing off those old stones. I’d seen photos but standing there, with sunlight slipping through stained glass onto the floor, it felt heavier somehow. She pointed out where kings were crowned and passed us a little packet of pink biscuits—apparently locals dip them in Champagne (I tried later; it’s odd but kind of works).

After that we wound down into the Mumm cellars. The air changed—cooler, almost damp, and it smelled faintly of chalk and something sweet.
