Paris: Notre Dame Outdoor Tour & Crypt Entry with Literary Stops
Notre Dame’s scars, Parisian resilience & stories beneath the city
You’ll stand before Notre Dame with a local guide who brings its scars and history to life, wander through literary corners at Shakespeare & Company, and (if you choose) descend into Paris’s archaeological crypt beneath Île de la Cité. Expect small surprises—like street music or warm bakery smells—and leave feeling connected to both Paris’s past and present.

The Experience
I didn’t expect to feel so much just standing outside Notre Dame. You can still smell the faint char in the air if you stand close enough — or maybe that’s my imagination running wild. Our guide, Camille, waved us over and started pointing out little things I’d never noticed in photos: the battered gargoyles, scaffolding laced like a spiderweb up the towers. She explained how artisans are restoring each piece after the fire, and I caught myself watching a stonemason work above us for a while instead of listening. The whole place felt alive and bruised at once.
We wandered through Place Dauphine (I love how locals just ignore tourists here), then crossed over to Shakespeare and Company. I’ve seen pictures but inside it’s another world — narrow stairs, paper dust in the air, creaky floorboards underfoot. Someone was playing piano in a back room; our guide told us Hemingway used to hang around here but honestly I was too busy running my fingers along cracked book spines to pay attention. I tried asking for directions in French and got a smile from the shopkeeper — probably mangled it but hey, they seemed amused.
The last bit was optional — going down into the Archaeological Crypt of Île de la Cité. It’s colder than you’d think under there, kind of musty, with old stones and Roman ruins poking out where you don’t expect them. Not everyone from our group went but I’m glad I did. There’s something grounding about seeing Paris literally built on centuries of other lives. When we came back up into the daylight, everything felt a little different somehow. That view of Notre Dame from across the Seine sticks with me — scarred but still standing.
