We stopped at Square du Vert-Galant first — a small, pretty green space created to honor Henry IV and his mistresses. Then came the Palais de Justice, which won the Grand Prix de l'Empereur as the greatest work of art produced in France that decade, yet it was where people were sentenced to the guillotine during the French Revolution, sometimes kings, sometimes the revolutionaries who had put them there. The contrast between what the building looks like and what it was used for — that's what stays with you.
