The Experience

I’d always seen photos of Mont Saint Michel but nothing really prepares you for that first glimpse — the way it just rises out of the bay, kind of dreamlike. Our guide, Sophie, had this easy way of weaving stories into the drive from Bayeux (which honestly went by faster than I expected). She pointed out little villages along the way and even joked about how Norman cows are “the real locals.” The air started to smell salty before we even got close — not sharp sea air, but something softer, mixed with earth.

Walking up through the old streets felt like stepping into a storybook, except there were seagulls overhead and shopkeepers chatting in French. Sophie knew everyone — she waved at an old man selling caramels and told us he’d been there since she was a kid. The climb up to the abbey is no joke (my legs reminded me later), but it’s worth every step. Inside, sunlight slanted through cold stone halls and echoed off centuries-old walls. She showed us where monks once copied manuscripts; I swear you could almost hear pages turning if you stood still long enough.

Lunch was on our own — I grabbed a galette from a tiny café because it smelled so good drifting out onto the street. There was time to wander after, and I ended up just sitting on a low wall watching the tide shift around the island. It’s quieter than I thought it would be for such a famous place. On the way back to Bayeux, nobody talked much — maybe just tired or maybe still thinking about those views from the top. I still am.
