The Experience

I always thought Mont Saint-Michel would feel like something out of a movie, but standing there in the early light, I realized it’s stranger and quieter than I’d pictured. Our guide, Antoine, showed up at our Bayeux hotel right on time (I was still fumbling with my coffee) and drove us out past fields that looked almost too green for Normandy in May. He pointed out hedgerows where the fog still clung low—said his grandmother called them “bocage.” I didn’t expect to care about hedgerows, but there you go.

The first glimpse of Mont Saint-Michel comes suddenly—the island just floats above the tidal flats. Antoine laughed when I asked if people ever get stuck out there (“Only Parisians,” he said). The minivan dropped us close to the shuttle point; after that it’s all cobblestones and narrow lanes. The air smelled salty and a bit like old stone. Inside the abbey, our private tour felt almost hushed—hearing about monks chanting centuries ago while sunlight slipped through those tall windows. My legs definitely noticed all the steps (good shoes are not optional), but somehow you forget your knees when you’re looking out across the bay. It was windy up top—my hair kept blowing into my mouth whenever I tried to take a photo.

We had some free time to wander the village after—shops selling caramel cookies, kids running ahead of their parents. There’s this one alley where you can hear gulls echo off the walls; for some reason that stuck with me. If there’s extra time, you might stop at another little town on the way back—I think we squeezed in Villedieu-les-Poêles for an hour or so (copper pans everywhere). But honestly, most of my head was still back at Mont Saint-Michel by then. It gets under your skin in a way that’s hard to explain.
