The Experience

The van pulls away from Avignon at 8 am, and within 45 minutes you're stepping out into Fontaine de Vaucluse, where the Sorgue river emerges from a limestone chasm at the end of a narrow green valley. The water is so clear and so green it doesn't look real. You walk the shaded pedestrian paths on your own — there's an 11th-century Romanesque church if you want it, or an old watermill still making paper the traditional way, but mostly you just stand there watching the spring and listening to the water. Your guide, either Veronica or Nicolas (they run the whole operation themselves), meets you back at the agreed spot and drives you toward Gordes.

Before you reach Gordes itself, there's a photo stop at the overlook, and this is where the Luberon valley opens up — vineyards and olive groves stretching into the distance, gentle mountains holding it all in. The town sits on a hillside so steep it looks like it might slide off. You get dropped at the castle and then you're loose in the cobbled streets, past the small cafés and ice cream shops, past the galleries and the people sitting on stone steps. It's crowded in summer, but the streets are narrow enough that you feel like you're inside something, not just looking at it. Around 1 pm you're back in the van heading to Roussillon.

Roussillon is where you get real time — a longer stop, a proper lunch break. Every house is painted a different shade of ochre: rust, burnt orange, pale yellow, deep red. It's not a gimmick; it's what happens when a village sits on top of an ochre mine. You can eat at one of the cafés or grab something quick and walk the Ochre Trail, a path that cuts through the cliffs of a former mine (entrance is 3.50€ and not included, but it's worth it if you have the hour). The colors in those cliffs shift as you walk — it's not something you can photograph properly.

After lunch you drive to Ménerbes, the fourth village, smaller and quieter than the others. It's a fortified hilltop town that inspired Peter Mayle to write "A Year in Provence," and you can feel why — it's the kind of place where nothing seems to have changed much. You walk the peaceful streets, and then it's back to the van for the drive back to Avignon, arriving around 5 to 5:30 pm. The whole day is 8 people maximum, which means you're not herded through these places, and your guide actually knows you by the end of it.
