The experience

You leave Paris in an air-conditioned van with a small group and an English-speaking guide who knows the history of each site. The drive to the Loire Valley takes you through the French countryside, and your first stop is Chambord: the largest château in the valley, built with hundreds of delicate spires and a double helix staircase that still impresses architects today. Your guide walks you through the main rooms, then you have at least an hour to wander the grounds, climb the towers, and take photos on your own.

Chenonceau comes next, known as the Ladies' Château because powerful women built it up and left their mark throughout. It's the only one of the three built directly over a river, and your guide explains why before you have free time to explore the interior and the floral gardens. From there, the van passes a 1,000-year-old castle with its own flower garden along the Loire. Your guide will point it out and stop for photos if you ask.

Lunch happens in Amboise, a medieval town with timber-framed houses and winding streets where you choose from dozens of restaurants and bakeries. After eating, you visit Amboise Castle itself, perched on a hilltop with views over the Loire River and the town below. You'll see the quarters where King Francis I lived, and the tomb of Leonardo da Vinci, who spent his last three years in the French king's service (access to the tomb is not always guaranteed). The guide shares the castle's history, then you have free time to explore the ramparts and take pictures. Before heading back to Paris, you stop at a small wine shop where your guide pours a tasting of three different Loire Valley white wines, the region's specialty, so you leave with a taste of what you've seen.
