The Experience

We rolled into the Loire Valley just as the morning mist was lifting off the fields—our guide, Claire, handed out bottled water and grinned like she knew what was coming. We had some kind of local chicken dish (I forgot the name already), crusty bread, glasses of wine from nearby vineyards. Someone asked about Leonardo da Vinci’s tomb—so after eating we wandered up to Château d’Amboise together. There’s this tiny chapel where he’s buried; people left little notes or flowers. I didn’t expect to feel much but standing there made me pause for a second.

Chenonceau came last—the castle that stretches right over the river Cher. It looked almost delicate in the late afternoon light, all arches and reflections in the water below. Inside it smelled faintly of old wood and flowers (fresh bouquets everywhere). Our group spread out; some people took photos on the bridge while I just leaned against a window for a while watching swans drift by. The drive back to Paris was quiet—everyone sort of lost in their own thoughts or maybe just tired from so much walking. I still think about that view over the river sometimes.
