The Experience

So you're sitting in your Paris hotel thinking about the Loire Valley, and you know you want Chambord and Chenonceau, but you also don't want to spend half the day on a coach with forty other people. You've got an hour there. Then it's back in the car for the drive to Chambord, which arrives around 4:30 in the afternoon. Chambord is the biggest — 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, 84 staircases — and the thing everyone talks about is the double-spiral staircase that Leonardo da Vinci might have designed. The two spirals go up three floors without ever crossing each other. You get until 6 p.m. to walk around, and then it's the drive back to Paris, arriving around 8:30 at your hotel.

The whole thing is 13 hours door-to-door, which is longer than most Loire Valley tours, but that's because you're not stopping to wait for a bus to fill up or sitting in a group of twenty.
