Paddle three different stretches of the Nive on your own schedule

Kayaking on the Nive River in Bayonne lets you choose your route: follow the historic quays of the old town, explore the flora and fauna of the plain of Ansot, or paddle into nature toward Ustaritz. Safety equipment is provided. The activity runs about an hour and suits all fitness levels, with guides available in English, Spanish or French.

The experience

The canoe rental starts at Yvan Canoe, where you pick which stretch of the Nive appeals to you. The historic quays route keeps you in the heart of Bayonne, paddling past the architecture and bridges that frame the city. The plain of Ansot route takes you out to a wider landscape where the river opens into marshland and you can spot the plants and animals that live there. The Ustaritz route is the longest paddle, carrying you deeper into countryside where the river runs through farmland and forest. All three are accessible to everyone (families, solo paddlers, groups of friends), and the minimum age is 7.

You handle the paddle and the pace. Safety equipment comes with the rental, and guides who speak English, Spanish or French are available if you want one. The whole outing takes roughly an hour, which leaves the rest of your day free to walk the old town, eat in one of the riverside restaurants, or move on to somewhere else in Aquitaine. Service animals are welcome, and public transport stops are nearby if you're not driving.
