The experience
You start at Port of Sanary sur Mer, where you board a shuttle boat for the crossing to Island of Embiez. The ride itself is part of the experience: the water is clear enough to see down as the island emerges on the horizon. Once you land, your guide hands you an electric bike and the real exploration begins. The island was bought by Paul Ricard as a nature preserve, which means it stays quiet and undeveloped: no crowds, no resort sprawl, just fauna and flora the way they've been left to grow.
The bike loop covers 6 km around the island's perimeter, but distance is not the point. Your guide stops wherever there's something to see: a vineyard tucked into a hillside, a shaded pine forest, a garrique slope, a cove so small and cut off that few people know it exists. The electric motor means the hills don't exhaust you, so you can focus on what your guide is saying about the island's history and the wildlife living here. Cicadas are your soundtrack. The stops are orchestrated by your guide, not by a fixed itinerary, so what you see depends on the season and what's worth stopping for that day.
After two hours of cycling and exploring, you board the shuttle boat again for the return to Sanary. The tour runs 3.5 hours total and is suitable for all fitness levels, though the electric bike does mean you're cycling for about two hours of that time. The tour operates from early June through late September, with limited days (Friday through Sunday) in June and September.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and French.
Can I do this tour if I've never ridden an electric bike before?
Yes. Electric bikes handle the hills for you, so the effort is manageable for all fitness levels. Your guide will show you how the bike works before you set off, and the 6 km loop is designed to be accessible rather than strenuous.
What exactly is on Island of Embiez that makes it different from other islands nearby?
Island of Embiez was preserved as a nature reserve by Paul Ricard, so it has stayed undeveloped and quiet. You'll see secluded beaches, secret coves, vineyards, pine forests and garrique hillsides: all the landscape of the Var coast, but without the tourism infrastructure. The wildlife and plant life are what the island is known for.
What if the weather is bad on the day of my tour?
The tour operates from June 4 through September 28. Bad weather cancellations are not mentioned in the tour details, so contact the operator directly about their weather policy before booking.
