The experience
The tour leaves Mende at 8 a.m. and climbs onto the Causse de Sauveterre plateau, passing through Sainte-Enimie on the way up. The village sits on the Tarn itself, built around a thousand-year-old history tied to a natural spring, and you'll have time to walk its narrow medieval streets before heading deeper into the causses. The landscape shifts as you cross the Causse Méjean: a high, open plateau that drops away suddenly toward the river below.
At La Malène, you board a boat with a skipper from the Bateliers des Gorges for a one-hour descent. The boat moves through some of the gorges' most photographed sections, and the skipper talks through the landscape and the Tarn's history as you float past limestone walls and tight meanders. When you reach the end of the descent, your driver-guide is waiting to pick you up: no need to arrange a return journey or a second vehicle. From there, you head straight to Point Sublime, a viewpoint that frames the Cirque des Baumes, one of the most striking bends in the entire gorge system. The view is the reason this stop carries its name.
You return to Mende around 1 p.m., with about 30 minutes of driving at the end. The whole route is managed by your guide, so the logistics (the timing between stops, the boat pickup, the drive back) are already arranged. Water (50cl per person) is included.
