You'll stop in each of the three villages (Domme perched on a cliff, Beynac with its castle overlooking the river, and La Roque Gageac built into the rock face) to explore on foot and take in the medieval architecture and riverside views. The villages are compact enough to walk through in the time you have, and the guide shapes the pace so you see the main sights without rushing.

After the village visits, you board a Gabarre, a traditional flat-bottomed boat, for a boat ride along the River Dordogne itself. This is where the tour's geography clicks into place: you see the villages from the water, the way they were built to command the river. The boat ride is leisurely, not a speed run, and the guide continues to point out landmarks and explain what you're looking at. If high water or fog makes the river unsafe, the boat ride is replaced by a visit to a castle instead, so the afternoon still holds together.

Children from age 4 can join (younger children aren't permitted), and the minivan is air-conditioned, which matters in summer heat.
