The experience

The drive from Sarlat takes an hour, broken by photo stops across the Dordogne Valley before you arrive at Rocamadour itself. The village sits in a vertiginous setting against a cliff face: a thousand-year-old historic site that UNESCO protects. Your guide walks you through the sanctuaries built into the rock, the miraculous chapel and its black virgin, the sarcophagus of St. Amadour carved into the cliff, and the legendary sword Durandal. You descend the cross trail on foot. A lift carries you back up.

On the return to Sarlat, the tour stops at one of two places depending on the season. From April through October, you visit Cougnaguet, a fortified watermill built by monks in the 14th century and still in operation: the only one of its kind left in France. Outside those months, the stop is Autoire, a medieval village open year-round. The van is air-conditioned, and bottled water is provided throughout.
