The experience
You're dropped at Le Havre for an afternoon or a full day, and this tour fills it with the ground where the invasion actually happened. After a 2-hour drive through the Normandy countryside, you reach Pointe du Hoc first: the 30-meter cliff face U.S. Rangers scaled under fire on June 6, 1944. The bomb craters remain untouched since the war. You walk through the German bunkers that once commanded the coastline and see how the terrain shaped the battle itself.
From there, the route follows 8 kilometers of coast facing the English Channel to Omaha Beach, the sand from the films and the photographs. A sculpture called Les Braves stands in honor of the soldiers who fought there. You have time to walk the beach itself, and the guide (if you've chosen one) explains the sector-by-sector action of that morning. Lunch happens on-site, at a spot the guide recommends. Then it's on to the Normandy American Cemetery, where 9,387 white crosses face the sea. The visitor center holds a detailed exhibition about the war. After that, a 2-hour drive returns you to your ship, hotel or station.
The tour comes in three versions: a private vehicle with an expert WWII guide, a private vehicle with a driver alone (no commentary), or a coach for up to 16 passengers with a guide. All three guarantee your return time to the ship. The itinerary is customizable. If one stop moves you more than the others, you can spend longer there and adjust the rest of the day around it. Pickup happens at your cruise terminal, hotel, station or airport in Le Havre itself, and the driver comes to you.
