The experience

The tour starts with a transfer to Bidart, where your guide walks you through a typical Basque village layout (the church, pediment and town hall), and explains how Basque social organization shaped these settlements. From there you move to Saint Jean de Luz, the major stop of the day. You can either walk a hillside path overlooking the bay or take the van to a viewpoint. Either way, the guide takes you through the town center to show you the beach, the fishing port, 17th-century merchant houses and Art Deco details. The stories here span whaling, privateering, Louis XIV's marriage in the town, and how tourism developed the coast.

Moving inland, you stop in Sare at the foot of the Rhune mountain, then reach Ainhoa, one of France's most beautiful villages. Your guide introduces the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela, which passes through this 13th-century Bastide town built to house settlers and shelter pilgrims. Next is Espelette, world-famous for its chili pepper. The village sits on the border between two Basque provinces, and the landscape shifts noticeably as you enter the mountains. The tour ends at Pas de Roland, a rocky defile where the river La Nive runs through. The name comes from Charlemagne's nephew and a real battle with Basque warriors, though the landscape itself has inspired many legends.

The food component weaves through the day rather than sitting as a single meal stop. You taste Bayonne ham, ewe's milk cheese and Basque cakes as part of discovering the region's gastronomic traditions. The van is air-conditioned, and bottled water and a smartphone charger are provided. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and is included in the price.
