The experience
The drive from Toulouse takes about an hour, then you arrive in Albi for a guided walk through the old town. The Sainte-Cécile Cathedral is the main draw here (one of the most outstanding Gothic structures in France), and you'll also pass through the Vieil Alby district, see the Old Bridge and visit the Saint-Salvi cloister. You get free time to explore on your own, which many use to visit the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in the Bishop's Palace if you want to pay the separate entrance fee. It holds the largest collection of the artist's work anywhere.
After Albi, a short drive brings you to Cordes sur Ciel, a medieval bastide perched on a hilltop with over 120 Gothic homes. The climb up through steep cobbled alleyways is on foot, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. Once at the top, you see the old market square, Renaissance houses and views across the countryside. The guide leads the walk, but you also have time to wander the narrow streets yourself.
The day ends at a Gaillac winery for a visit and tasting session. The wine tasting fees are included. Gaillac is one of France's oldest wine regions, and the tasting is set up to let you sample the local appellations. Note that snacks are typically not served during tastings in France to keep the wine's flavor pure, so eating a good breakfast or lunch beforehand is worth planning.

Top questions
How much walking is involved in this tour from Toulouse?
Albi's old town is walked with the guide on mostly flat ground, and Cordes sur Ciel requires climbing steep cobbled alleyways on foot to reach the hilltop village. That's the most demanding part of the day. Comfortable walking shoes are required, and you should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness.
What is the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum and can I visit it on this tour?
The museum is housed in Albi's historic Bishop's Palace and holds the world's largest collection of works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the 19th-century painter. It's located in Albi during your free time there, but the entrance fee is not included in the tour price, so visiting is optional.
Is lunch included in the 8-hour tour?
Lunch is not included and is at your own expense. You have free time in Albi to find a restaurant or café, or you can eat before the tour starts. Since wine tasting happens at the end of the day without snacks, eating a proper meal earlier is recommended.
What happens at the Gaillac winery?
Gaillac is one of France's oldest wine regions, and your stop includes a visit to one of the local wineries with a tasting session. The tasting fees are included in the tour price, and you'll sample wines from the Gaillac appellation.
Do I need to book this tour in advance, and what's the minimum group size?
The tour requires a minimum of 2 adults to operate, so book ahead to confirm your departure. You'll have an English-speaking driver throughout the day.
