Three hours on quiet forest trails, one husky, a waist harness, and the dogs' handlers teaching you how they work

A husky trail walk in Lapland where each guest is paired with their own Alaskan husky for the full three hours, walking 2–5 km of forest and fell trails around Äkäslompolo and Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park. You learn to handle the dog with a waist harness, walk at a relaxed pace with regular stops, and hear directly from the owners about raising and training sport dogs in Arctic conditions. Small groups keep the experience personal. The route adjusts to weather and the dogs' welfare comes first.

The experience

You arrive in Äkäslompolo and meet a small family of Alaskan huskies in training. Each guest gets their own dog for the day. Before you head out, the handlers show you how to use the waist harness: the dog walks in front and pulls, and you learn the footwork and timing that makes it work. This is hands-on from the start: you're not watching a demonstration or riding in a sled, you're actively walking and working with the dog.

The trail itself follows forest paths and open fell views, chosen based on the weather and conditions that day. In autumn the routes show golden colours. In winter you're walking through snowy silence. The pace is deliberate. There are regular stops for photos, rest, and the dogs to recover. Along the way, the owners share what daily life looks like with a team of sport dogs: how they're raised, what training looks like, how they're cared for, what it takes to run them in the Arctic. You're learning from people who live this, not from a script.

The whole experience is built around the dogs' welfare. Small numbers, appropriate distances, work suited to each dog's age. These aren't constraints you'll feel, they're what make the day feel genuine and relaxed. Hot drinks and snacks are included. You'll have time to connect with both the landscape and the dog you're walking.

Is this one for you?Choose this if you want to actively work with the dog rather than watch or ride: the waist harness and the dog pulling in front means you're doing the activity, not observing it. Small groups and a relaxed pace suit anyone who wants time to actually connect with the husky and the Arctic landscape, rather than cover distance quickly.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What does walking with a husky actually involve? Do I need to know how to handle dogs?

No prior experience is needed. The handlers teach you to use the waist harness and how the dog pulls in front of you. You learn the footwork and timing on the trail itself. The experience is designed to be accessible, and the handlers guide you throughout.

How far do we walk, and is it difficult?

The trail covers 2–5 km depending on conditions and the group. The pace is relaxed with regular stops, and the experience is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The focus is on connection and immersion, not speed or distance.

What's the difference between autumn and winter walks in Lapland?

Autumn trails follow forest paths with golden colours and open fell views. Winter routes are snowy with Arctic silence and frozen wilderness. The route adjusts based on weather and conditions, so you experience whichever season you're visiting in its natural state.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the starting point?

You can meet at the meeting point in Äkäslompolo, or choose the option that includes pickup in Äkäslompolo: select whichever suits your plans when you book.

What happens if the weather is bad or a dog isn't ready to work that day?

Routes are chosen based on weather and conditions each day, so the experience adapts. Dog welfare comes first, so if a dog isn't ready, the handlers adjust the group or the route to keep the experience genuine and safe for the animals.
