The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how everyone on the dock at Port Denarau seemed to know each other — or at least acted like it. Our dive guide, Mere, grinned and handed me a mask that still smelled faintly of salt and sunscreen. I’d worried about being rusty (it’d been a while since my last certified scuba diving trip), but she just said, “No worries, we go slow.” And then we were off, eight of us plus the crew, bouncing out toward the Mamanuca Islands with biscuits rattling in a tin and someone’s reggae playlist fighting the engine noise.

I’ll admit: dropping into that blue was a little nerve-wracking at first — there’s always that moment where you wonder if you forgot how to breathe underwater. But then it’s just coral everywhere, and these tiny electric-blue fish darting around. At one point, our instructor pointed out a sea cucumber as long as my forearm. I tried to say its Fijian name (“lase”), but Li laughed when I butchered it. The water was warm enough that I barely noticed my wetsuit clinging to my back.

After our first dive near Treasure Island, we had water and those crumbly biscuits (I think I ate more than my share). The second dive was over the Salamander wreck — eerie in a good way, all shadows and flickers of silver fish. It felt quieter down there than anywhere else I’ve been. Coming up, everyone just floated for a minute looking at each other like: did that really happen? And then Mere started telling stories about her uncle who used to fish these reefs before tourists ever came out here. That stuck with me.
