The Experience

The kava ceremony hits different when you're standing on the deck of an actual sailing ship, not a catamaran. Captain Cook Cruises Fiji picks you up from Nadi or Denarau resorts and takes you an hour out to Kadavu Lailai, a private island in the Mamanuca Islands surrounded by acres of coral reef. The welcome drink and the ceremony happen right there at the start, and then you're under sail — which sounds romantic until you realize the whole point is that you're headed somewhere most day-trippers never see.

What surprised me was how hands-on the marine biology part actually is. There's a resident marine biologist on the boat, and they run the snorkeling tours, the glass-bottom boat trips, and something called the Build a Reef coral restoration program where you're literally helping replant coral. It's not a lecture; you're in the water doing it. The guided nature walks happen on the island itself, and the crew explains what you're looking at — the plants, the animals, the whole ecosystem. Morning tea, afternoon tea, a full BBQ lunch with beer and house wine included, all served beachside. If you want to paddle board or kayak instead of snorkel, that's there too. If you want to do nothing but sit on white sand, that's also fine.
