Summary

Quad bike from Nadi past temples into pine forests and meet villagers

You’ll ride ATVs from Nadi up into the Nakala Mountains for wild views over the Mamanucas, splash through muddy trails (if it’s wet), visit Yavuna Village where locals welcome you in for kava and conversation—not a show—and finish with a quick ride along a quiet beach before heading back. It’s not polished or staged; you’ll feel part of Fiji for a day.

I didn’t expect the first thing I’d feel was nerves—my hands actually shook a bit as I put on the helmet at Go Dirty’s base in Nadi. Our guide, Solo, grinned and said “No worries, just follow me.” The test drive calmed me down. Then we rumbled out together, engines buzzing louder than my thoughts. We zipped past the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple—so bright and detailed I almost missed Solo waving us on. It smelled faintly sweet outside, like incense and dust mixed together.

The mud puddles were deeper than they looked. I tried to dodge one but ended up splashing myself anyway (Solo laughed—he said it’s a rite of passage). The air cooled as we climbed into the Nakala Mountains; you could feel the change in your skin. Pine needles crunched under our tires and when we stopped on this plateau, the Mamanuca Islands just floated in the haze below us. We had snacks there—nothing fancy but after all that riding, even crackers taste good.

After that break we rode another stretch—about 11km if I remember right—into Yavuna Village. No staged welcomes or anything; kids ran up shyly and then got bold enough to ask about our bikes. There was a kava ceremony too. I tried it (earthy, numbing), and Li from our group tried to say ‘vinaka’ in Fijian but got it wrong—the elders smiled anyway. It felt like we were guests instead of an audience. The school was busy with real lessons going on; nobody stopped for us.

The last bit was winding tracks back through cane fields and then suddenly sand under the wheels—we actually rode right onto a local beach before heading back to base. My shoes were caked with mud by then but honestly I didn’t care; there’s something about seeing Fiji this way that sticks with you longer than any souvenir.
