The experience

The drive to Bertha's Beach takes about 90 minutes from Stanley, and your guide will talk through the landscape as you go: the stone runs and the small sheep farms that dot the Falklands. The beach itself is home to Gentoo and Magellanic penguins, South American terns, the endemic Falkland flightless steamer duck and ruddy-headed geese. You'll spend 90 minutes there watching the penguins carry out their daily activities in their natural habitat, and the dolphins and sea lions that frequent the shore add another layer to what you'll see.

After the return drive to Stanley, another 90 minutes, your guide will take you on a short city tour to show you the main points of interest and help you plan how to spend the rest of your day. The guide is a local Islander with deep knowledge of the islands, the wildlife and island life, and they speak English, Spanish, Hindi or Gujarati depending on your preference. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and you'll have bottled water, tea or coffee, and a packed lunch (sandwich, crisps, cakes or biscuits) included.
