The experience

Your guide is an Islander who experienced the 1982 war firsthand and can explain how it unfolded across the landscape you're driving through. The tour starts with a 40-minute drive to Fitzroy, a working sheep farm where six memorials overlook the bay where the Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram were bombed on June 8, killing many Welsh Guards waiting to disembark. The inscriptions are in English and Welsh. From there, a 45-minute drive takes you to Goose Green, where the first and longest battle of the war took place on May 28–29. A small museum in the settlement documents the fighting, and you'll see memorials to Lieutenant Colonel H Jones (awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously), pilot Nick Taylor, and the 15 soldiers of 2 Para buried there temporarily.

After Goose Green, a 40-minute drive brings you to Blue Beach Military Cemetery, built in the form of a corral and dedicated to the South Atlantic Task Force. The cemetery overlooks San Carlos Water, where British troops landed on May 21, 1982. You then visit the Argentine cemetery, which holds 237 graves of soldiers who died in the war. The Argentine government refused to repatriate the bodies after the conflict, so they remain in the Falklands. Behind the graves is a remembrance wall listing all 649 Argentinians killed. A walk up the hill above the cemetery offers views of Goose Green and other 1982 sites. The return to Stanley takes 1 hour 40 minutes and passes Teal Inlet and Estancia Farm, tracing the route British soldiers walked during their advance on the capital.

The tour ends in Stanley at the 1982 memorial and the Museum, which has a dedicated 1982 section (optional visit). Timing at each location can be adjusted to suit your needs. You'll receive a packed lunch of home-baked bread rolls, biscuits, crisps, and hot and cold beverages. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water is provided throughout the day.

Is this one for you?The five-hour duration leaves room for other activities in Stanley on the same day, but the drive times mean you'll spend roughly half the tour traveling between sites rather than exploring them in depth. Choose this tour if you want a guide who lived through the war to explain the landscape and the decisions made there, and if you're willing to spend significant time in the vehicle to cover the spread-out battle sites.
