The experience

How do you see Gondar's castles and churches without renting a car or navigating the city on your own? The tour picks you up from your hotel or airport and handles the route through the sites that made this city the center of Ethiopian art and culture for 250 years after Emperor Fasilidas founded it in the 1630s. A live English-speaking guide walks you through each stop, explaining the architecture, the history, and the stories painted on the walls.

Fasil Ghebbi, the fortress-city at the heart of Gondar, is surrounded by a 900-meter wall and contains palaces, churches, monasteries and buildings shaped by Hindu, Arab and Baroque influences brought by Jesuit missionaries. Inside, you'll see Dawit's Hall in the northern enclosure and the royal structures that once housed successive emperors. South of the fortress lies Adababay, the old marketplace where imperial proclamations were made and troops assembled. It is now a city park. The Fasilides Baths sit nearby, a compound of stone walls, a central tower and a bridge, slowly reclaimed by the roots of ancient badian trees. Once a year on January 19th the bath fills for Timkat, the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian celebration of Epiphany, but you can walk the grounds and see the structure year-round.

Debre Birhan Selassie Church, meaning "Trinity and Mountain of Light," stands out for its twelve rounded stone towers representing the twelve apostles, with a thirteenth taller tower for the Lion of Judah. The church was originally built in the 17th century, then rebuilt in the 1880s after a raid and lightning strike. Every inch of the interior walls is covered in vivid biblical paintings (originally painted for those who could not read), and 135 cherubs gaze down from the circular cornice near the top. Your guide helps you read the visual stories. The tour also includes the former Falasha quarter, where Ethiopian Jews once lived and worked as skilled craftspeople. Most were airlifted to Israel in the 1980s, but original houses with artwork and a small synagogue remain.
