The experience
The day starts at the National Museum of Ethiopia, where you move through the archeological galleries, pre-Aksumite artifacts, paintings and ethnographic sections that hold agricultural implements and other material culture. Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old hominin fossil, is the centerpiece most visitors come to see. From there, the guide drives you to Marcato, one of Africa's largest open-air markets, where you walk the spices area and the recycling section: a working landscape of salvaged goods and the people who move through it daily. The market is dense and active. The walk is short but gives you a direct view of how the city sources and reuses.
After Marcato, you drive south toward Debrezeit (also called Beshoftu), passing through the Ethiopian countryside. Lunch happens at a resort there, then you head to the crater lakes for a short boat ride. These volcanic lakes sit in a geothermal zone and are the day's quietest moment. The return to Addis Ababa or to Bole International Airport follows, arriving in late afternoon.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and French.
What exactly is Lucy, and where do I see her in the National Museum?
Lucy is a 3.2-million-year-old hominin fossil, one of the oldest and most complete skeletons of a human ancestor ever found. The National Museum houses her remains in the main galleries, and the tour takes you through the archeological sections where she is displayed alongside other pre-Aksumite artifacts and Ethiopian cultural material.
How much walking is involved in Marcato, and what will I see there?
Marcato is a massive open-air market, and the walk is short but covers the spices area and the recycling section, where salvaged goods and materials are sorted and sold. You will move through an active, working environment. The walk itself is manageable, but the market is crowded and the pace depends on how long you spend observing.
What are the crater lakes near Debrezeit like, and do I get in the water?
The crater lakes are volcanic formations in a geothermal zone south of Addis Ababa. The tour includes a short boat ride on one of them. You do not enter the water, but you travel across it and see the landscape from the water.
Is lunch included, and what are my options in Debrezeit?
Lunch is not included in the tour price. You stop at a resort in Debrezeit where you can order and pay separately for a meal before the boat ride on the crater lakes.
