The experience
The tour opens with a 2-hour drive from Mek'ele through the Tigray highlands, passing villages and rock formations before you reach the Gheralta region. Your guide meets you at the airport or your hotel wearing an Arre Tours badge and briefs you on the route ahead. The first day's hikes are moderate: about 45 minutes to reach Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, two churches built into the cliff face. You eat a homestyle lunch in a local village, then watch the sun set over the escarpment from your overnight lodge.
Day two starts early if you choose the Abuna Yemata Guh climb, one of Ethiopia's most exposed hikes: the final ascent uses ropes and narrow ledges secured by your guides, and the church sits 2,580 meters up. After lunch, you drive 5 to 6 hours to Axum via Adwa, a route heavy with history. Your guide explains the 1896 victory at Adwa and points out the mountains where it unfolded. The road itself is the education here, not a blur past a window.
Axum on day three means the obelisks, King Ezana's stone inscriptions carved in three languages, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion, where Ethiopian Orthodox tradition holds the Ark of the Covenant rests (viewing it is not permitted). A certified guide walks you through the Axumite civilization and the pre-Christian kingdoms that ruled here. Your driver drops you at the airport or hotel afterward, or can arrange a lunch stop if your flight leaves late. All guides speak English. The 4x4 or minivan is air-conditioned and sized to your group.
