The experience

The tour starts with a flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, where a 4WD vehicle and experienced guide meet you for the 300-kilometer drive to Ert-Ale. You reach the active volcano's camping ground at the caldera rim, then walk for about an hour to the summit crater lake, currently in its active cycle, before returning to camp for the night under open sky on a mattress with clean bedding.

Day two begins before dawn to watch the sunrise, then continues to Lake Afdera, a salt lake in the heart of the depression where you can swim. The afternoon drive takes you to Hamedela, with a stop at Lake Assale to watch the sunset. You camp again that night with water provided for the dry climate. On the final day, you drive to Lake Assale for sunrise, then spend hours at the Dallol geothermal site (a lunar landscape of colored mineral formations and chemical reactions) followed by a visit to a salt and mud-formed cave beneath the crater. A picnic breakfast happens near the cave. The day ends with a swim in the saltwater Lake Karum, a visit to salt miners, and the long drive back to Semera for your flight to Addis Ababa.

The tour covers roughly 950 kilometers of driving across three days, with walking distances of 1.5 to 2.5 hours per day. All camping gear, meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner each day except the final day when only breakfast and lunch are provided), and transport in an air-conditioned vehicle are included. The guide is a local expert who speaks English and leads the group through each site. Hotel pickup and drop-off in Addis Ababa bookend the journey.
