The experience

The first day moves through the Northern Cluster of rock-hewn churches, a collection of 12th-century structures carved directly from the earth. Biete Medhane Alem stands as the largest monolithic church in the world, holding the Lalibela Cross. Biete Maryam, the oldest of the group, carries frescoes and carvings across its interior walls. Biete Golgotha and Biete Selassie draw pilgrims for their sacred significance, while the twin churches Biete Debre Sina and Biete Mikael display intricate stone details. Biete Giyorgis, carved in the shape of a cross and the most recognizable of all Lalibela's churches, closes the day's exploration before you return to your hotel.

Day two takes you to Yemrehanna Kristos Monastery, built inside a mountain cave in the distinctive Aksumite style using layered wood and stone. The monastery predates Lalibela's churches and remains one of Ethiopia's best-preserved sacred structures. Inside, ancient frescoes, wooden beams and carved patterns line the walls, each element explained by your guide as a reflection of Ethiopia's Christian heritage. Toward the back of the cave lie the skeletal remains of thousands of pilgrims who traveled here across centuries and chose to be buried at this holy site: a physical record of the monastery's spiritual pull across generations.

An early flight on day three carries you to Addis Ababa. If time allows before your departure, you can visit the National Museum of Ethiopia, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, or Merkato, Africa's largest open-air market. The tour concludes with a farewell dinner at Yod Abyssinya cultural house before your onward travel. Throughout all three days, your guide speaks English, water is unlimited, and all hotel stays, entrance fees, airport transfers and ground transport are covered.

What are the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela actually like inside?

The Northern Cluster churches (Biete Medhane Alem, Biete Maryam, Biete Golgotha, Biete Selassie, Biete Debre Sina, Biete Mikael and Biete Giyorgis) are carved from solid rock and feature frescoes, wooden carvings and intricate stone details. The cave also holds the remains of thousands of pilgrims who were buried there over centuries.
