The experience
Lalibela sits at the center of this journey: a UNESCO World Heritage Site where monolithic churches rise from a 2,600-square-meter natural rock terrace carved by King Lalibela in the 12th century. These are not ruins or monuments. They remain the living spiritual center of Ethiopia's religious life, still in use as active Christian shrines. The first day brings you from Addis Ababa by domestic flight, and you step into the churches immediately upon arrival. The second day is devoted entirely to exploring the rest of the site and the view over the Lasta Mountains and the valleys that ring Lalibela.
The return to Addis Ababa on day three gives you the city itself: the National Museum, where the fossil remains of Lucy, the famous hominid, are housed; Entoto Mountain for the view; and Merkato, an open-air market that sprawls across the city and holds its own rhythm. A local English-speaking guide travels with you throughout, and the two domestic flights are included in the price. You stay in mid-range hotels in Lalibela, with accommodation in Addis Ababa arranged separately.
