Blue lava, acid springs, and salt mined by hand in one of Earth's harshest deserts.

A 3-day tour through Ethiopia's Danakil Depression with an English-speaking guide, camping accommodation, and air-conditioned vehicle. You fly from Addis Ababa to Semera, then drive into the Afar region to hike Erta Ale volcano at sunset and stand at its crater rim as the lava lake glows. Return before dawn for a second visit. The route crosses salt pans to Hamed Ela, where you watch local miners load salt blocks onto camels at Lake Asale and swim in the natural pool at sunset. On the final day, you drive to Dallol to walk its kaleidoscopic landscape of acid springs and colored mineral formations before flying back to Addis Ababa. Minimum group size is five travelers. The experience

The Danakil Depression sits 120 meters below sea level in Ethiopia's Afar region and ranks among the hottest and lowest places on the planet. The landscape is a maze of solidified lava, rock, and salt flats punctuated by geological oddities: Erta Ale's blue-burning lava lake, Dallol's acid springs that paint the ground in greens and reds and yellows, and Lake Asale's salt pans where miners still work by hand. You'll travel in an air-conditioned Toyota Landcruiser with an English-speaking guide and a cooking team that sets up camp each night.

Day one moves fast: you fly into Semera, then drive roughly seven hours south into the depression, stopping for lunch as the landscape shifts from asphalted roads to rougher terrain. By late afternoon you reach the base camp of Erta Ale volcano. After dinner, you hike for about an hour and a half to the crater rim, arriving around 7 PM to watch the lava lake glow as darkness falls. Day two starts before sunrise. You hike back to the crater one more time while the light is still low, then descend by 8 AM for breakfast. The three-hour drive to Hamed Ela crosses open salt pans. You visit the village (population around 600), then spend the afternoon at Lake Asale watching salt workers load blocks onto camels and camel caravans, and you swim in the natural pool before sunset. Day three takes you to Dallol, where the kaleidoscopic terrain of fumaroles and salt mounds creates an otherworldly landscape. You walk the salt canyon, eat breakfast around 9 AM, then drive back to Semera airport for the flight home.

The heat is relentless: average temperatures hover around 35 degrees Celsius, with days that spike above 48. The terrain demands moderate fitness: the hikes are short but steep, and the vehicle rides are long and rough. Camping means basic conditions. The cooking team prepares meals at each stop. The tour operates in small groups (minimum five travelers) and includes all entrance fees, government taxes, and the vehicle with air conditioning, though the domestic flights to and from Addis Ababa and any gratuities are separate.

Top questions

What is Erta Ale and what will I see there?

Erta Ale is an active volcano in the Danakil Depression with a rare lava lake inside its crater. You hike to the rim at sunset on day one and return before dawn on day two to watch the lava glow in low light. The lake's surface churns and burns blue in places, a sight few places on Earth offer.

Can I actually swim in Lake Asale, or is it too salty?

Lake Asale is extremely salty, so salty that you float. On day two, after visiting the salt miners, you swim in the natural pool at sunset. The high salinity keeps you buoyant without effort.

What is Dallol and why is it called an alien landscape?

Dallol is a former mining settlement surrounded by geothermal features: acidic hot springs and salt mounds create a kaleidoscopic terrain of greens, reds, and yellows that looks like no other place on Earth. You walk through it on day three and watch local Afar people mining salt from the ground.

How long are the hikes, and how difficult are they?

The hike to Erta Ale's crater rim takes about an hour and a half and is steep but short. The descent takes roughly the same time. Both hikes are done in the early morning or evening to avoid peak heat. Moderate fitness is required. The challenge is the terrain and altitude gain, not the distance.

What happens if I can't handle the heat or the camping conditions?

The Danakil is genuinely harsh: temperatures regularly exceed 35 degrees Celsius and can spike above 48. Camping is basic. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. All others should have at least moderate fitness and realistic expectations about discomfort.

Do I need to arrange my own flights to Semera and back?

The tour includes pickup and your English-speaking guide, but the domestic flights from Addis Ababa to Semera and back are booked separately and are not part of the tour price.
