The Experience

The first thing that happened was I nearly got on the wrong bus at the Tallinn Cruise Port. I guess that’s what happens when you’re still half-asleep and everyone’s speaking a different language around you — but our guide, Maarja, spotted me waving my ticket around like a lost kid and called out my name. There was this moment when we reached Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform: everything went quiet except for one guy’s camera clicking and the distant church bells. You could see all of Tallinn Old Town spread out below — red roofs, spires, some smoke curling up from a chimney somewhere.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is even more impressive up close than in photos. I tried to pronounce its name properly (Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin — probably butchered it). Inside it smelled of candle wax and something sweetly herbal; outside there was a street musician playing accordion, which felt perfectly timed somehow. We wandered down narrow lanes lined with merchant houses and old towers — honestly, my feet started complaining after an hour on those stones but it was worth it for St Catherine’s Passage alone. The artists’ studios are tucked away there; one woman waved us inside to see her ceramics.

After the guided part ended at Viru Gate, we had two hours of free time. Some people rushed off for souvenirs or lunch (I grabbed a pastry that tasted like cardamom), others just stood in Town Hall Square staring up at the pharmacy sign from 1422. I found myself just watching locals go by — bundled up against the wind, laughing with each other in Estonian (which sounds nothing like anything I know). When it was finally time to head back to the port, I realized I hadn’t bought anything except that pastry but felt oddly content anyway. Sometimes you don’t need souvenirs — just that feeling of having been somewhere real.
