Round-trip transport from Tallinn.★ 4.98 (50)9h€ 167View › We were already standing in Raekoja plats when our guide, Kristiina, asked if we’d ever heard about the only two people executed here — and honestly, I hadn’t even noticed how quiet the square felt until then. The stones underfoot were cold (I should’ve worn thicker socks), and there was this faint smell of roasted nuts from a nearby cart. She had a way of slipping stories in between facts, like how decisions for all of Tallinn used to be made right where we stood. It’s weird thinking about all that history just humming under your shoes.
The Cat’s Well was next — I half expected it to look more dramatic but it’s just this old stone well tucked away. Kristiina said locals still believe water spirits live down there. She told us to listen for whispers, and I swear for a second I thought I heard something (probably just wind or my stomach). There was this little kid peering over the edge who kept giggling every time someone leaned in too far. It made the whole thing feel less spooky and more like some neighborhood secret.
We didn’t go inside every church (tickets weren’t included), but we did pause outside one that looked plain until you realized it had stories layered into its walls — like a gravestone for a Swedish king’s daughter just sitting there, almost hidden. Kristiina pointed out details I would’ve missed: chipped carvings, faded paint, the way people passing by still touch the stones like it brings luck or something. The walk up to Upper Town was steeper than I thought, but she let us catch our breath at a garden where she explained why Estonians celebrate June 15th with Danish flags fluttering everywhere. Honestly, that part surprised me — never thought about how those old alliances still echo today.
There’s this spot on Toompea hill where you see all those red roofs tumbling toward the Baltic Sea and modern glass buildings poking up behind them. We lingered there longer than planned because nobody wanted to leave that view (and yeah, I still think about it sometimes when I see photos). On the way back down, Kristiina led us past the oldest café in Tallinn — she swore nothing inside has changed since the 1800s — and then we ended at the pharmacy that’s been open since forever. The air smelled faintly medicinal; not unpleasant, just old and full of stories.
