You’ll get to breathe in fresh bog air outside Tallinn before diving into centuries-old streets in Old Town. This tour mixes wild Estonian nature with real stories from locals—plus those postcard-worthy city views.
The morning air outside Tallinn felt crisp, almost piney, as we stepped out of the van near Viru Bog. Our guide, Maarja, handed out these funny-looking wooden boards for our shoes—turns out, bog walking is a thing here. The ground was springy underfoot, soft but not muddy. You could hear nothing but the wind rustling through the reeds and an occasional bird call. The pools reflected the sky so perfectly that I nearly lost my balance staring at them. If you’re lucky with the weather (we had sun peeking through), the colors—golden mosses against blue water—are unreal.
Back in Tallinn by midday, the city felt quieter than I’d expected. We wandered into Old Town just as most of the morning crowds had cleared out. Our guide led us up cobbled lanes to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral—the onion domes are even more impressive up close than in photos. She pointed out little details I’d never have noticed: a faint smell of incense drifting from inside, and a local vendor selling warm pastries right outside Parliament Square. From the upper viewing platforms, you get this patchwork of red rooftops and church spires stretching toward the sea. We finished at Town Hall Square, where street musicians played softly in the background. It’s a lot to take in for one day, but somehow it all fits together.
The walk in the bog is gentle but does require some balance; kids love it! There are specialized infant seats available and guides adjust pace as needed.
The bog walk usually takes about 1–1.5 hours including stops for photos and snacks; Old Town sightseeing is around 1.5 hours on foot.
Wear comfortable shoes you don’t mind getting a bit damp; layers are best since weather can change quickly near Tallinn.
Your day includes transport by air-conditioned vehicle, a knowledgeable local guide for both city and nature parts, plus all necessary gear for exploring the bog safely.
