The Experience

“You know, Estonians don’t really rush,” said Kristjan as he handed me my helmet at the Tallinn Cruise Port. He grinned like he’d just let me in on a secret. The air smelled faintly of seaweed and engine oil — not unpleasant, just honest. I fumbled with the bike seat (why do I always forget how these things work?), but Kristjan didn’t mind waiting. There were only nine of us, so it felt more like a group of friends than a tour.

The ride out to Kadriorg Park was easy enough — flat roads, bits of wind off the Baltic. The park itself surprised me; it was early summer so everything was green and a little wild around the edges. Kristjan pointed out Peter the Great’s old palace through the trees. “He built this for his wife,” he said, then shrugged, “but she didn’t really like it.” We laughed about that for longer than we should’ve. There were families picnicking on the grass and someone playing accordion somewhere off to the left — I never did spot them.

Standing there, Kristjan told us about how thousands gather every five years to sing together — “It’s hard to explain until you hear it,” he said quietly. The place felt big but peaceful, almost humming even when empty. After that we cruised down to see the Russalka monument by the water; I remember the salty air mixing with fresh-cut grass as we leaned our bikes against a bench.

Old Town was our last stop before heading back to the port. We parked our bikes outside those thick medieval walls and wandered in on foot for twenty minutes — not nearly enough but somehow just right after all that riding. I bought a tiny wooden owl from a lady who spoke three languages better than I speak one (she winked when I tried my Estonian). Walking back through those narrow cobbled streets, I kept thinking how Tallinn manages to feel both ancient and alive at once. Still can’t quite put my finger on why.
