The Experience

I didn’t think I’d end up grinning at a donkey before lunch, but that’s exactly what happened out on Wetley Moor Common. We met our guide (I think her name was Sarah?) by the gate. She handed out wellies since the ground was still soft from last night’s rain. The air smelled like damp grass and something sweet I couldn’t place. My daughter was already eyeing the smallest alpaca, who apparently answers to “Biscuit.”

The health and safety bit was quick, not too serious. Just enough to make sure nobody got trampled or lost in the reeds. Then we set off, one person per animal, except for the under-twos who had to be carried (the moor isn’t made for prams). Walking beside Biscuit felt oddly calming. You notice how quiet it gets out there except for birds and the occasional donkey snort. Our guide told us about each animal’s quirks: turns out donkeys are much fussier about puddles than alpacas. Who knew?

At some point my son tried to get his donkey to speed up (“Come on, mate!”), but they have their own pace: stubborn but kind of funny. We stopped for photos near a patch of yellow gorse, everyone laughing because Biscuit kept nudging at my pockets (probably hoping for snacks). It wasn’t rushed. We had time to just stand there and look around. I keep thinking about that moment: sky wide open, animals quietly munching grass, nothing urgent at all.
