The Experience

The moment you realize you're about to jump off a rock into the sea is the moment you understand why people come back to coasteering. You're standing on a ledge in Torquay's UNESCO geopark, wetsuit zipped, helmet on, your instructor pointing at the water below and saying it's deeper than it looks. It is. The route is circular, which means you're not just throwing yourself at the coast once — you're working your way along it, climbing and jumping and squeezing through sunken sea caves that smell like salt and ancient stone. The whole thing takes a few hours, and by the end your legs are tired and your heart is still running fast.

What makes this different from just swimming is the geology. Your guide talks about the rocks as you go — how old they are, what they've survived, why the caves formed where they did. There are stories too, the kind locals tell about pirates and smugglers who used these same caves centuries ago. You're not just moving through the landscape; you're reading it. The wildlife is there if you look: seabirds, maybe seals if you're lucky. The water is clear enough that you see the rocks beneath you as you swim between them, which is either reassuring or terrifying depending on how you feel about depth.

The adventure scales to what you can actually do. As long as you can swim and boulder — meaning you're comfortable climbing on rocks and moving through water — the route adjusts. Some people leap off every ledge; others find their own pace. You get kitted up in a wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid and gloves before you start, so the cold and the scrapes aren't a problem. Coffee or tea comes at the end, which tastes better after you've been in the sea for a couple of hours than it probably ever has before.

Public transport gets you to Torquay, and from there it's straightforward to meet your guide. Bring swimwear under the wetsuit, a towel, and anything else you need for the day. The circular route means you finish where you started, so there's no scrambling to find your way back.
