A 1-hour indoor climbing taster session in North Devon teaches you the fundamentals of top rope climbing with a qualified instructor, all equipment provided. The session is open to ages 6 and up. You'll start with a safety briefing and move straight into climbing with hands-on guidance throughout.
The Experience
The session runs for one hour and starts with an introduction to top rope climbing basics. A qualified instructor walks you through the safety essentials and technique, then gets you on the wall. Everything you need (harness, rope, shoes, chalk) comes with the booking, so you show up ready to climb without worrying about gear or prior experience.
The instructor stays with you the whole time, adjusting the pace to match your comfort level. Whether you've never climbed before or haven't been on a wall in years, the taster format is built for a first go. You'll learn how to tie in, how the rope system works, and what proper climbing movement feels like. The focus is on safety and confidence, not performance.

What exactly is top rope climbing?
Top rope climbing means the rope is anchored at the top of the wall and runs down through your harness to the ground, where an instructor manages it as you climb. It's the safest way to learn because the rope catches you if you slip, and the instructor controls the tension.
Do I need to bring anything or wear specific clothes?
Bring nothing. All climbing equipment is provided. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in: avoid anything too baggy or restrictive. Most people climb in regular athletic wear and socks.
Can my child do this if they're under 6?
The minimum age is 6 years old for safety reasons. Children from 6 up are welcome and climb with the same instruction and equipment as adults.
What if I'm nervous about heights or climbing?
The instructor starts you on shorter sections of the wall and builds up gradually. You control how high you go, and the rope system means you're always safe. Many nervous climbers find the taster session reassuring because they see how the safety system works.
How fit do I need to be?
You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. Climbing uses your arms, legs and core, and you'll feel the effort. If you have any concerns about your fitness, cardiovascular health or spinal issues, mention them when you book.
