The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Bath hotel and heads to Avebury, home to the world's largest neolithic stone circle. Unlike Stonehenge, where barriers keep visitors at a distance, you're free to walk among Avebury's stones and touch them. Your guide explains the site's thousands of years of history and the latest archaeological discoveries. The stones remain an important spiritual place for many visitors today.

From Avebury, the route passes Silbury Hill (a man-made chalk mound built thousands of years ago whose exact purpose is still unknown) before reaching West Kennet Long Barrow. Built over 5,600 years ago, this communal tomb is one of the oldest prehistoric monuments in the country and one of the best-preserved chambered tombs. If you want to, you can go inside. After lunch (at your own cost), the tour continues to Stonehenge. Your guide walks you through the Visitor Centre and around the stone circle itself, explaining how archaeologists believe it was constructed and sharing the stories behind Britain's most famous prehistoric monument. There's time for photos before the drive back to Bath.

The private car means you travel at your own pace without waiting for other groups, and the guide's local knowledge frames each site rather than leaving you to read placards alone. All entry fees are included upfront, so there are no surprises at the gates.
