Seven Sisters Walking Tour 16 km Loop with Guide
16 kilometers of white cliffs, river valleys and downland in one morning and afternoon
A guided walking tour from Seaford Beach covers a 16 km loop to Cuckmere Haven and back, taking in the Seven Sisters Cliffs, Seaford Head and Hope Gap over 5 hours including breaks. The route is flexible — you can shorten it, adjust the pace, or catch a bus back to Seaford after lunch if the full loop feels like too much. Your guide Matt, an accredited leader with the British Mountaineering Council, takes you through seascapes, forests, agricultural land and secluded villages that don't appear on standard maps. The walk is moderate in difficulty; appropriate footwear and a moderate level of fitness are essential.

The Experience
The walk starts at Seaford Beach at a time you arrange after booking. You'll have 15 minutes to settle in and take in the seafront before the route begins. From there, the path climbs to Seaford Head and follows the coast toward Cuckmere Haven, with a stop at Hope Gap where (if tides allow) you can descend to the beach itself. The white cliffs rise above you in a way that photographs never quite capture — the scale and the light shift as you move along the ridge.
After Hope Gap, the walk drops down to follow the Cuckmere River inland, a meandering chalk stream that cuts through farmland and forest. You'll reach the Seven Sisters Visitors Centre around the midpoint, where you stop for 45 minutes at Saltmarsh Farmhouse Cafe. This is where lunch and drinks come in — they're not included, so you buy what you want there. Some walkers use the break to explore the centre and learn about the area; others rest and watch the river bend below. If the full loop feels too long at this point, you can catch a bus back to Seaford instead of continuing.
Those who continue take a steep climb into Friston Forest, then descend back to Cuckmere Haven on the South Downs Way. The final stretch passes through Chyngton Farm — open fields of sheep and cattle — and offers a third view of the Seven Sisters before you return to Seaford Bay. Your guide often stops at Brewsters Coffee Co. at Seaford Head on the way back, and once you're at the seafront, Matt is happy to recommend a local pub if you want to end the day there.

What's the actual distance and how much climbing is involved?
The typical moderate route is 16 km (10 miles) as a loop starting and finishing in Seaford, taking 5 hours including lunch and refreshment breaks. The walk includes climbs to Seaford Head and Friston Forest, but the route is flexible — you can discuss a shorter or easier version with Matt after booking, or opt for the bus return after lunch if you want to reduce the second half.
What exactly is Hope Gap and why do you stop there?
Hope Gap is a beach access point along the cliffs between Seaford Head and Cuckmere Haven. Your guide stops there so you can descend to the beach itself (tides permitting) and stand directly below the white cliffs — it's one of the closest views of the Seven Sisters you'll get on the walk.
Is lunch included, and what are the options at Saltmarsh Farmhouse Cafe?
Lunch and drinks are not included in the tour price. You stop for 45 minutes at Saltmarsh Farmhouse Cafe at Cuckmere Haven, where you buy your own food and refreshments. The cafe is a working farmhouse with a shop, so options are available on-site.
Can I do a shorter version if I'm not sure about the full 16 km?
Yes. The route length, pace and difficulty are flexible and can be discussed after you book. You can also catch a bus back to Seaford after the lunch stop at Cuckmere Haven instead of completing the full loop, which cuts the walk roughly in half and removes the steeper climbs in the second half.
What's the meeting point and how do I get there if I don't have a car?
You meet your guide at Seaford Beach. Seaford is accessible by train (the station is about 10 minutes' walk from the beach) and by bus from Brighton and other nearby towns. Public transportation options are available near the start point, so you don't need a car to reach the meeting spot.
Who is Matt, and what makes him a good guide for this walk?
Matt is your accredited tour guide and a member of the British Mountaineering Council. He's a local who knows the seascapes, forests, rivers and secluded villages in the area — places and routes that don't appear on standard maps. He also knows the local pubs and can recommend them at the end of the day.
