The experience
“Don’t eat breakfast,” our guide grinned as we met near Broadway Market. I almost laughed: didn’t realize how serious he was until the first whiff of coffee and something sweet frying hit me. The market was already buzzing: dogs on leads, kids with sticky fingers, someone singing off-key by a bread stall. Our guide (Tom, born-and-bred East Londoner) knew everyone. He pointed out which pastries were worth queuing for (the cinnamon buns, trust me), and told us how these canals used to be full of barges hauling coal. I never would’ve guessed. My shoes got a bit muddy but nobody cared.
The walk between markets was shorter than I expected, maybe ten minutes each? Tom filled those stretches with stories about Hackney’s old warehouses and how Broadway Market nearly disappeared in the ‘90s. At Columbia Road Flower Market the air changed. Suddenly it smelled like damp earth and tulips, and people squeezed past balancing armfuls of sunflowers or just chatting in every accent you can imagine. I tried to say “daffodil” in cockney rhyming slang: Tom laughed so hard he nearly dropped his coffee.
Brick Lane was louder, messier: in a good way. We ducked into the bagel shop that’s been there forever (I got salt beef, still thinking about it). Vintage jackets everywhere, neon signs reflected in puddles from last night’s rain. At Spitalfields Market the crowd shifted again: more tourists here but also locals hunting for vinyl records or weird old postcards. Tom gave us 15 minutes to wander on our own at each stop. Just enough to get lost without actually losing him. Didn’t expect to feel this much like part of the city instead of just passing through.
