The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the morning light hit Churchill’s statue in Parliament Square — not dramatic or anything, just sort of steady and gray, like London itself. Our guide (Tom, who had this dry wit about him) started off with a story about Churchill’s wedding at St Margaret’s Church right across the street. I’d walked by that place before and never realized how much history was tucked into those stones. There were a few of us huddled there, listening to Tom talk about Churchill as if he’d just seen him last week. It felt oddly intimate for central London.

We wandered down Whitehall, passing the Cenotaph — people actually stopped to look at it, which surprised me. Tom explained how Churchill had stood there during both wars. The air smelled faintly of diesel from the buses but also something older, maybe stone or rain on pavement? He pointed out statues I’d never really noticed before; one was Alanbrooke, apparently a bit of a character. At Horse Guards Parade we paused for photos (I tried to get the cavalryman in frame but mostly got my own confused face). Tom joked that Churchill would’ve approved — he started out as a cavalry officer himself.

The real reason I booked this Churchill War Rooms tour was to see the bunker itself. Going underground felt like stepping into someone else’s anxiety — low ceilings, everything preserved exactly as it was in 1945. There was this weird silence down there except for our footsteps and Tom’s voice echoing off the walls. The map room looked untouched; you could almost smell old paper and tobacco (or maybe that was just suggestion). I lingered by Churchill’s chair longer than I meant to. Still think about what it must’ve been like making decisions down here while bombs fell overhead.
