The experience

The tour starts in Piccadilly Circus, where your guide points out the statue's wartime significance to Londoners, then moves through Regent Street, the Mile of Style, toward Mayfair. You'll walk Savile Row, the world's finest tailoring street, and see the shop where Churchill's surviving Siren suits (the one-piece garments he wore during the war) are still displayed. The route takes you past his childhood home, a hat shop that supplied him for decades, and the cigar merchant where he bought his cigars and where his smoking chair still sits if the room is open.

The walk crosses into Westminster's political heart: you'll stand outside Downing Street, see the Reform Club where Churchill spent time, and reach Parliament Square to view the church where he married Clemmie. Along the way, the guide points out WW2 memorials: the Battle of Britain monument, the only Nazi memorial in Britain and the story behind it, statues of wartime generals, and the Women's Cenotaph. You'll pass the Ministry of Defence, the old War Office, and the Citadel from WW2, learning Churchill's views on each. Trafalgar Square and its Nelson monument come into the route as well.

The tour ends at the Churchill War Rooms, the underground bunker from which Churchill ran the war while London was being bombed above. You descend into the preserved complex, exactly as it stood in 1945, where you can walk the rooms where decisions were made and see the spaces where staff worked through the Blitz. Entry is included, and depending on your hotel location and walking pace, you'll typically arrive between 12:45 and 1:45 p.m. The whole experience takes four hours from start to finish.
