I didn’t expect to feel nervous at the Titanic Memorial, but there I was, clutching my coffee and trying not to look too much like a tourist. Our guide—Paul, fittingly—had that easy Scouse humor that puts you at ease straight away. The van was waiting nearby (air conditioning actually works, which is rare), and before we’d even left the city center he’d already pointed out three things I’d never have noticed on my own. There’s something about Liverpool’s light—sort of silvery even when it’s cloudy—that makes everything feel a bit nostalgic.

We stopped outside Paul McCartney’s old house first. It’s just this ordinary brick terrace on Forthlin Road, but you could almost picture a teenage Paul sneaking out the door with his guitar. I tried to imagine what it would’ve sounded like inside back then—probably someone banging on the piano while tea boiled in the background. At St Peter’s Church Hall, Paul (our guide) told us about the day John met Paul (the other one). He pointed to this spot in the hall and said, “That’s where it happened.” I stood there for a second longer than everyone else—not sure why. Maybe hoping some of that history would rub off?

Strawberry Field was next—those red gates are smaller than I thought, chipped paint and all. The gardens smelled like grass after rain (it had drizzled earlier), and there were these little wind chimes somewhere in the trees. Entry to the exhibition was included, so we wandered through quietly—I’m not sure what I expected from John Lennon’s piano but seeing it up close felt oddly intimate. Someone played ‘Imagine’ softly over speakers; an older woman next to me wiped her eyes. Guess I wasn’t alone in feeling it.

Penny Lane actually has a barbershop with photos in the window (I had to check). We took turns posing by the street sign while our driver grinned patiently at our attempts to sing along—badly—to ‘Penny Lane’ on someone’s phone speaker. Ringo’s mural is bright and strange against all those old bricks; locals walked by without glancing up, just another Tuesday for them I suppose.

The tour finished outside the Cavern Club—music leaking up from below, people laughing on Mathew Street even though it was barely noon. Our group lingered for photos by The Beatles Statue; someone offered to take mine and I forgot how awkward I am in front of cameras until too late. Still—I keep thinking about that moment inside St Peter’s Hall, standing where two teenagers first shook hands before anyone knew their names.
