The experience

The tour starts at the Beatles Statue on Liverpool's Pier Head, surrounded by the three historic Grace buildings and the River Mersey. From there, the guide takes you through the city's art schools (John Lennon's and the high school Paul McCartney and George Harrison attended), where the band's story begins with their time as the Quarry Men and their early days playing in Hamburg. You'll see the oldest remaining Penny Lane road sign, which Paul McCartney signed, then drive down the actual street while listening to the song, picking out the details Paul mentions in the lyrics.

The tour moves through the places that shaped each member. At Strawberry Field, now a visitor centre and museum run by the Salvation Army, you walk the gardens John used to visit as a boy and stand at the famous red gates. You see the location where John and Paul first met as teenagers, pass the grave of Eleanor Rigby, and visit the homes where they grew up: John's house with his Aunt Mimi (now preserved by the National Trust), the McCartney family home where Paul and John wrote and rehearsed many early hits, Ringo's childhood home with the striking painting of him nearby, and George's first house in working-class Liverpool. The tour ends at the Cavern Club on Mathew Street, where the Beatles performed 292 times and built their earliest following.

Private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle is included throughout, so you move between stops without arranging your own transport. The guide speaks English and shapes the tour around the stories behind the songs and the band's rise to superstardom.

Top questions

What exactly is the Beatles Statue and where is it located?

The Beatles Statue depicts John, Paul, George and Ringo and stands at Liverpool's Pier Head on the River Mersey, surrounded by the three historic Grace buildings. It's the starting point of the tour and offers plenty of photo opportunities.

Can I actually go inside Strawberry Field?

Strawberry Field is now a visitor centre and museum dedicated to John Lennon, still run by the Salvation Army. You walk the gardens where John used to spend time and visit the famous red gates, though the tour focuses on the outdoor areas and the story behind the song.

Do we stop at the Cavern Club or just look at it from outside?

The Cavern Club is viewed from outside on Mathew Street. The tour discusses its significance as the place where the Beatles played 292 times and built their early following, but entry to the club itself is not part of this tour.

How does the private tour work if I'm staying in a different part of Liverpool?

Pickup is included in the tour price, so the driver collects you from your accommodation and brings you back after the 3.5 hours are finished. You don't need a car or need to navigate to a meeting point.

What's the difference between Penny Lane the song and Penny Lane the actual street?

Penny Lane is a real street in Liverpool where Paul McCartney grew up. The song lists specific landmarks and details from the area (the barber, the banker, the fireman), and the tour takes you down the street so you can see the places Paul wrote about and understand what inspired the song.
