The experience

Durdle Door anchors the itinerary: you'll stand on the clifftop to take in the panoramic views, and those who want to can walk down to the limestone arch itself. From there the route moves to Lulworth Cove, where the horseshoe bay sits framed by alternating bands of hard and soft rock shaped since the last Ice Age. You have time to walk down to the white pebble beach, sit with a coffee or a pint in the village, or simply take in the geometry of the cove from above.

Portland occupies the second half of the morning. The tour passes through the Isle of Portland (technically a peninsula, but it reads as an island), and stops at the Olympic Rings Stone Sculpture viewpoint for sweeping coastal views west across Chesil Beach, an 18-mile stretch of shingle running along the southern tip of the Jurassic Coast. At Portland Bill, the southernmost point, you'll see Pulpit Rock, a man-made limestone formation from the 1870s shaped like an open Bible, standing beside the iconic Portland Bill Lighthouse. The route also takes in the Verne Citadel, a historic fortress, and Portland Castle, built by Henry VIII between 1539 and 1541 as an artillery fort. The shuttle bus back to your cruise ship departs from Portland Castle.

The guide is English-speaking and leads a small group, which means you can ask questions and move at your own pace through each stop. Pickup happens from your cruise ship, and the return is timed to get you back before departure. The vehicle is air-conditioned, bottled water is provided, and parking fees are covered.
