The experience
The Cotswolds sits only 10 minutes by train from Oxford or less than 30 minutes by taxi, so you start riding into rolling countryside almost immediately. The route follows quiet roads built partly on ancient Roman routes, and the hills are steep enough that you'll feel the terrain, but the villages and ruins justify every climb. Alasdair or one of his local colleagues leads the group at a pace that lets you take in the stone cottages, gardens and heritage as you pass through.
Stops are built around what you came to see: a free-entry Roman villa about 4 miles into the ride; the preserved cottage lanes and medieval ruins of Minster Lovell; Burford, known as the gateway to the Cotswolds, with its historic high street that has appeared in BBC dramas; and smaller hamlets like Crawley and Wilcote where you can duck into a pub if you need a break. The day is structured around your needs. You choose when and where to stop for lunch or afternoon tea, and the guide knows which villages have cafes and shops.
Bring water and snacks to carry. The tour does not provide them. The bike is included, and the route demands steady fitness and comfort with climbing, so this suits riders who can handle a full day in the saddle across uneven terrain.
