The experience
Start outside King's College and follow the audio directions through the university's heart. You'll pass King's College Chapel, one of the world's most celebrated Gothic buildings, then move through Trinity College to see Christopher Wren's library. The route continues to St John's and Magdalene, crosses the River Cam at Garret Hostel Bridge and climbs Castle Mound for sweeping views across the city's spires. The narration weaves in stories of the people who walked these streets (Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking, Francis Crick), and explains how centuries-old traditions still shape student life today.
The tour runs one to two hours depending on how long you linger at each stop. You control the speed entirely: pause to photograph King's College Chapel, spend time in the Round Church (built around 1130, one of only four surviving medieval round churches in England), or skip ahead. The audio, maps and geodata download to your phone, so you don't need a data connection once you've started. When you finish, you can walk back or board one of the River Cam boat trips that depart from near the starting point.
You'll need your own smartphone and headphones. Admission fees to any college interiors are separate from the tour price, so you can choose which ones to enter or walk past the exteriors as the route does. The walk suits all fitness levels, though Castle Mound involves climbing for the panoramic views.
