Cambridge’s quirky history, college legends and old streets

You’ll wander Cambridge’s tangled lanes with a guide who knows every odd story — from Roman invaders to student pranks at Trinity College. Hear Market Square’s famous bells, try (and probably fail) to pronounce “Caius,” and end up outside the pub where DNA was toasted over beer. You’ll laugh more than you expect — and see Cambridge as locals do.

The Experience

I almost missed the start because I got turned around by Magdalene Street’s morning bustle — bikes everywhere, a delivery guy nearly clipped my elbow. Our guide (Ben, I think?) waved me over with a grin and didn’t make a fuss about me being late. Right away he was tossing out these wild facts about Romans and Vikings fighting over the bridge, but also joking about how “pisspot lane” used to be exactly what it sounds like. The air smelled a bit like coffee and river mud, which somehow fit.

We wandered toward the Round Church, dodging students on ancient bikes. Ben had this way of mixing up big history stuff (Normans, Saxons) with little stories — like how Newton supposedly pranked his own college at Trinity. He pointed out some carved stone that honestly looked like nothing special until he told us why it mattered. At one point he made us all try saying “Caius” properly; I definitely failed, but so did everyone else. He laughed and said even locals argue about it.

The market square was loud with bells chiming — apparently the most famous chimes in England? There were stalls selling bread that smelled yeasty and sweet, and Ben explained how Town vs Gown fights used to break out right there. We ended up outside a pub where someone discovered “the secret of life” (DNA!) and announced it over a pint. I liked that detail — you don’t get that from textbooks.

I left thinking Cambridge is much weirder and funnier than I expected. It wasn’t just old buildings; it felt alive, messy, still full of odd traditions. The wind picked up near Castle Hill and Ben said something about Vikings probably hating the weather too. That stuck with me for some reason.
